Industries & onboarding
The ten industries, what each one actually changes, and how to edit it later.
During setup Noots asks what your organization does. The answer shapes four things, and you see all four in a live preview before anything is created: your starter projects, the tabs every project opens with, your divisions, teams and example roles, and the extensions that get installed.
Setup used to ask "what kind of team is this?" *and* the industry, on different steps. They overlapped almost entirely, and the first one was the only answer that reached your starter content. There is one question now, asked before anything is written.
The ten industries
| Industry | For | What it installs by default |
|---|---|---|
| IT & Managed Services | Ticket-driven work with SLAs, billable hours and alerts from your monitoring tools. | SLA Timers · Monitoring & RMM Webhooks · Time Tracking & Billing · Intake · On-call · Ledger · Checklists & SOPs · CRM |
| Engineering & Construction | Field crews, hard schedule dependencies and RFI paperwork that has to hold up. | Hard-Dependency Gantt · RFI Workflows · Offline Sync Protocol · Risk Register · Approvals · Checklists & SOPs · Vendor & Client Register |
| Healthcare Administration | Rotating clinical shifts, PHI safety and audit-ready records by default. | PHI Redaction Engine · Shift-Based Scheduler · Compliance Audit Logger · Policy Library · Learning Hub · Checklists & SOPs · Announcements |
| Government & Public Sector | Public transparency, records requests and tightly scoped inter-agency access. | FOIA Exporter · Public Read-Only Boards · Advanced RBAC · Compliance Audit Logger · Policy Library · Decision Log · Approvals |
| Legal & Professional Services | Matters, billable hours, precedent you can find again and sign-off before it goes out. | Time Tracking & Billing · Intake · Snippets Library · Checklists & SOPs · Renewal Tracker · Codex · Approvals |
| Education | Terms and timetables, staff training on record, and announcements people actually acknowledge. | Announcements · Policy Library · Learning Hub · Checklists & SOPs · Intake · Codex · Ledger |
| Agency & Consulting | Client work priced by the hour, people resourced across accounts, sign-off before delivery. | Time Tracking & Billing · CRM · Budgets · Workload · Approvals · Timeline |
| Financial & Accounting Services | Close cycles that repeat, sign-off that is evidenced, deadlines that do not move. | Compliance Audit Logger · Time Tracking & Billing · Checklists & SOPs · Recurring Tasks · Approvals · Policy Library · Risk Register |
| Retail & Multi-site Operations | The same job in every store, on a date, with proof it was done. | Checklists & SOPs · Announcements · Recurring Tasks · Intake · Ledger · Team Availability · KPI Dashboard |
| General Purpose | A clean, lightweight workspace with the things almost every team reaches for. | Codex · Roadmap · Standups · Decision Log |
Each industry also offers a longer list beyond the ticked ones — open more that ⟨industry⟩ teams use on the setup step, or filter the Marketplace by industry at any time.
The tabs each industry opens a project with
This is the part people notice first. Overview, Board and Members are always on and cannot be removed from a project; everything else varies.
| Industry | Default tabs | Why it differs |
|---|---|---|
| IT & Managed Services | Overview · Board · List · Backlog · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Capacity · Budget | Backlog replaces Timeline — a service desk plans in days, not quarters. |
| Engineering & Construction | Overview · Board · Gantt · Timeline · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Capacity · Budget · RAID | Gantt replaces List, and RAID is on — dependencies and risk are contractual here. |
| Healthcare Administration | Overview · Board · List · Timeline · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Capacity · RAID | RAID replaces Budget — incidents and risks are tracked per project; spend is not. |
| Government & Public Sector | Overview · Board · List · Timeline · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Budget · RAID · Goals | Goals and RAID are on, Capacity is off — public work is measured against published objectives. |
| Legal & Professional Services | Overview · Board · List · Backlog · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Budget | Backlog is the matter-intake queue; Timeline and Capacity come off — a matter is not a programme. |
| Education | Overview · Board · List · Timeline · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Budget · Goals | Goals is on for the outcomes you report; Capacity is off — teaching load lives in the timetable. |
| Agency & Consulting | Overview · Board · List · Timeline · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Capacity · Budget | The standard set — client work with a fee, a schedule and named people is what it was built for. |
| Financial & Accounting Services | Overview · Board · List · Timeline · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Budget · RAID | RAID replaces Capacity — the risk register is an audit artefact you hand over. |
| Retail & Multi-site Operations | Overview · Board · List · Timeline · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Budget · Goals | Goals is on for per-site targets; Capacity is off — staffing here is a rota, not a project load. |
| General Purpose | Overview · Board · List · Timeline · Files · Meetings · Calendar · Members · Capacity · Budget | The standard set. Add or remove tabs on any project from its tab strip. |
An extension can add a tab of its own on top — RFIs, Site Work, Billing and Canvas all do — and it appears exactly when that extension is installed.
Changing the default tabs for your whole workspace
- 1Open Org settings → Project tabs.
- 2Tick and untick. Overview, Board and Members are locked, because no project can remove them.
- 3Save default tabs. It applies to every existing project as well as new ones — except projects whose tab strip somebody has already rearranged, which keep their arrangement.
- 4Reset to ⟨your industry⟩ puts it back to the researched default. That is the only way back.
Changing your industry later
- 1Open Org settings → Industry.
- 2Your current one carries a Current badge. Pick another to see the full preview, plus an explicit list of which project tabs would be added and removed.
- 3Tick or untick anything in the install list, then Save.
Changing industry installs what you tick and never uninstalls anything; to remove an extension, uninstall it from Org settings → Extensions. It *does* change the default project tabs, which the screen shows you before you save. It never re-seeds teams or projects — that happens once, when the workspace is created.
Can I mix extensions from different industries?
Yes. An industry is only a recommended bundle — every extension is installable on its own from Org settings → Extensions or the Marketplace, whatever you chose.
I picked General Purpose. Did I miss out?
No. You get the full base product plus the handful of apps almost every team reaches for in its first month, and the entire catalogue is one click away in the Marketplace.
Is the CRM installed by default?
Only for IT & Managed Services and Agency & Consulting, where it is part of how the business runs. Legal, Engineering and Financial Services are offered it unticked, and every other industry can install it from the Marketplace.
Who can change the industry?
Someone with permission to edit the organization — an Owner or Admin in most workspaces.
Who can install extensions?
Owners, admins and managers. Installing changes the product for everybody — new nav tiles, new project tabs, background jobs, and in two cases a surface open to people outside the workspace — so it is not a decision one member takes for the whole team. Using what is installed needs no special permission.
